Short answer: pick ChatGPT if you want one tool that does a bit of everything, pick Claude if most of your work is writing and long documents, and add Perplexity if you need quick research with sources. All three cost about $20 a month at the entry paid tier, so the real question is which one fits your work. And there's a catch none of them solve: a chat assistant waits for you to type. It doesn't answer your phone or follow up a lead at 7 p.m. More on that below.
TL;DR
- ChatGPT is the all-rounder: chat, documents, images, code, scheduled tasks and a long list of app connections.
- Claude is the writer and document reader: long files, careful drafts, Projects, and a tone many people find more natural.
- Perplexity is the research tool: answers come with citations, so you can check them.
- Entry paid plans are close in price ($17 to $20 a month), so decide on workflow and privacy, not cost.
- None of them replaces a system that answers calls, books appointments and chases leads for you. That's automation work, not a chat window.

The three tools in one minute
OpenAI describes ChatGPT as a place to chat, work and code. Chat covers questions, drafting, web search and image generation. Work builds documents, slide decks, spreadsheets and PDFs. Codex handles code.
Claude is Anthropic's assistant. It does writing and editing, code, data visualization, web search, memory, file creation, projects, and connections to Slack and Google Workspace, plus Microsoft 365.
Perplexity is built as an answer engine. You ask, it searches the live web, and it shows where each claim came from. It's less a creative partner and more a fast, sourced researcher.

Prices come from each company's own pages, linked in the sections below. They change, so check before you buy.
Plans and prices (US)
ChatGPT. OpenAI's January 2026 announcement lists Go at $8/month, Plus at $20/month and Pro at $200/month in the U.S. Go gives ten times the messages, uploads and image generation of Free. Plus adds GPT-5.2 Thinking and Codex. For teams, ChatGPT Business is $20 per user per month billed annually, or $25 billed monthly, with two or more users.

Claude. Per Anthropic's pricing page, Free is $0, Pro is $20/month ($17/month equivalent if you pay $200 up front for the year), and Max starts at $100/month. Pro adds more usage, Claude Code, Projects, more models, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Max gives 5x or 20x Pro usage. Taxes aren't included.
Perplexity. The pricing page shows Free at $0, Pro at $17/month billed annually, and Max at $167/month billed annually. Pro raises usage limits and adds premium data sources and search across the web, files and apps.
The gap you'll hear about on forums is usage caps. Reddit threads complain that Claude's limits bite harder, and that the jump from $20 to $100 has no middle step. That's user experience, not a spec, but if you plan to lean on it all day, test the free or Pro tier on a real workload first.
Writing and customer-facing content
This is where Claude gets the most love. Several hands-on reviewers say its drafts read more naturally and need less editing before publishing. One independent writer ran the same content tasks through both tools and landed on Claude for prose. That's opinion, and your taste may differ.
ChatGPT is still a strong drafter. OpenAI says it can draft, rewrite, summarize, translate and follow complex instructions. For emails, social posts and quick summaries, you won't see a dramatic gap.
A practical test: take one real customer email, a service page paragraph and a review reply. Run all three through both tools with the same prompt. Keep whichever one you edit least.
Long documents and reasoning
Claude is built with long-context work in mind. Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6 system card describes capability in long-context reasoning, document creation, financial analysis and multi-step research. If you're feeding in a 60-page vendor contract, a pile of invoices or a policy manual, Claude is the one many people reach for first.
ChatGPT handles files too, and its "thinking" models are good at step-by-step problems. For most small-business documents, either works. The edge shows up with very large batches where the tool has to stay consistent across many files.
Research and fact-checking
If you need sources, Perplexity is the natural pick. It cites as it answers. ChatGPT has Deep Research, which builds a research plan, lets you watch or interrupt, and returns a structured report with citations. Claude also has web search and a Research feature.
A 2025 clinical comparison of 24 questions found all three accurate. ChatGPT and Claude scored higher on depth, while Perplexity scored higher on reference support and best overall in that task. Small study, one medical topic, so treat it as a hint and not a ranking.
One rule applies to all three: click the citations. Models can attach a link that doesn't say what the answer claims. If you want a walk-through of verifying them, see this piece on checking ChatGPT's cited sources.

Automation: scheduling, follow-ups and repetitive work
Here's what business owners actually ask us. Can I just use ChatGPT to run my scheduling and lead follow-up?
Partly. ChatGPT can run scheduled tasks: one-time or recurring, monitoring for changes, and in some cases reacting to events with connected Gmail, Slack or GitHub. Event-triggered tasks are for eligible paid users, and workspace admins may need to switch them on. ChatGPT Business also connects to Google Calendar, Gmail, Outlook, HubSpot and Salesforce, per OpenAI's apps page.
OpenAI also says ChatGPT agent is no longer available and points to ChatGPT Work for longer multi-step jobs, per its help center. Claude has Claude Cowork for delegating tasks and Claude Code, on Pro and above, per Anthropic.
Those are good for you working faster. They're not the same as a live system that:
- picks up the phone when you're with a customer,
- books the appointment straight into your calendar,
- texts a new lead within minutes, and
- nudges the no-reply ones over the next week.
That takes setup, integrations, testing and someone watching it. Hence the fork: use the chat tools to think and write, and use a built system for the customer-facing flow.
Privacy and business data
Before you paste customer info into anything, check the plan's data terms.
- ChatGPT: Business and Enterprise plans don't train models on your business data by default, per OpenAI.
- Claude: you can opt out of model training on all plans, including Free and Pro, per Anthropic.
- Perplexity: Enterprise Pro and Max don't log or use business data for training, per Perplexity's help center.
If you run a dental, medical or men's health clinic, add another layer. Patient details are a different matter from marketing copy. Don't put identifiable patient information into a general chat tool. Ask your compliance advisor or healthcare attorney what your setup requires before you automate anything that touches patient records.
Which one should you pick?
Pick by the job, not the brand.
- You write a lot and read long files: Claude.
- You want one subscription for drafting, images, spreadsheets and app connections: ChatGPT.
- You research suppliers, competitors or regulations and need sources: Perplexity.
- You want the cheapest way to start: try the free tiers on one real task each week, then pay for the one you hit the limit on.
- You want it all: the tools are complementary. A common workflow is Perplexity for research, ChatGPT for a first draft, and Claude for a tone and accuracy review.
Don't pay for three at once on day one. Start with one, and add another only when you can name the task it fixes.
Perspective: what we see from the field
We build this stuff for owner-led businesses every day, and here's the pattern. Owners don't lose customers because their email copy was a little stiff. They lose them because the phone rang while they were on a job, a form sat unanswered overnight, or a quote never got a second nudge.
ChatGPT and Claude are great at helping you think, write and sort information. Use them. But they sit there until you open them. The money leaks in the gaps between you and the customer.
So our advice is boring and practical. Pick one chat tool, get comfortable, and use it for drafting and analysis. Then look at where leads actually drop off, and fix that with a system that runs without you. Start with the biggest leak, not the shiniest tool. That's why we build and maintain the systems ourselves instead of handing you a roadmap and wishing you luck.

FAQ
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
It depends on the job. Many reviewers prefer Claude for long documents and natural-sounding writing, while ChatGPT wins on breadth: images, voice, many integrations and scheduled tasks. Try both on your own real tasks for a week.
Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT for research?
For quick, sourced answers, usually yes, because citations are the core of how it works. ChatGPT's Deep Research produces longer structured reports with links. Verify the sources either way.
Which is cheapest for a small team?
ChatGPT Business is $20 per user per month billed annually, or $25 billed monthly. Claude Pro is $20 monthly or $17 monthly billed annually, and Perplexity Pro is $17 monthly billed annually. Check each company's pricing page for current numbers and team plans.
Can these tools answer my phone or book appointments?
Not on their own. They can draft replies, run scheduled tasks and connect to calendars or email, but answering calls and booking customers in real time needs a dedicated system built around your calendar and CRM.
